Book Review :Bonang Mohale’s Lift As You Rise

One of my favorite leadership authors is our very own Prof Bonang Mohale. Bonang Mohale is a highly respected businessman, known for his patriotism and for his active role in advancing South Africa’s interests. Over his impressive career, he has held chairmanships and directorships at some of South Africa’s top companies including Sanlam, Shell, Hollard Insurance, and Swiss Re Africa.

In 2018 he published his very first book titled LIFT AS YOU RISE, speeches and thoughts on Leadership which I have had the pleasure of reading.

Below are some of my favorite ideas and quotes from the first half of the book

” If you are empowered, you are still a passive recipient of power. But if you are emancipated, you are an active participant in creating power. One is finite, and the other has limitless opportunities”.(pg 6)

“Behold The Turtle – It only makes progress when its neck is stuck out, if you’re not prepared to stick your neck out and open yourself to new experiences, new influences, and new inputs, you’ll want to close the border, you’ll want to build a wall. You’ll want to only be in the presence of the familiar. And when that happens, you regress.”(pg 11)

“If we don’t do the things we are born to do, the things we are able to do and the things that are right to do, we deprive ourselves of the true joy that one gets from the absolute triumph of having helped another human being”. (pg 18)

“If you are standing still, you’re going backward – there are only two categories: the quick and the dead.” (pg 30)

Executive and Innovation – “At Shell, the board philosophy for our meetings was the three D’s – we discuss to decide so we can do “(Pg 32)

“When culture collides with performance management, culture wins every single time. The same way that when values collide with profits, values trump profits every single time.”( pg 72)

This book is a compilation of some of his spoken and written words in which Prof Mohale reveals the issues he is passionate about – among them transformation, people development, constructive collaboration, and integrity – and how they came to define his career and his life. He looks into the ideas behind his words and offers fresh thoughts on the subjects they cover.
